The Belt of Venus is the pink band above the eastern horizon just after sunset, sitting on the blue-grey shadow of the Earth itself.

Opposite the sun, the Earth's shadow rises up the eastern sky as the sun sets, a blue-grey band; above it the air still in sunlight scatters back the red that the long path has left, and that is the belt. It is easiest to see on a clear evening with an open eastern horizon, in the twenty minutes after sunset — turn your back on the colour everyone else is watching.

The dark band beneath it is the planet's own shadow rising into the atmosphere; both climb as the sun sinks.
