Nautical twilight is when the sun is 6° to 12° below the horizon, and the horizon and bright stars both show.
Sailors took star sights in it, needing both a star and a horizon; it is the deep blue giving way to night.

You stand at the middle of your horizon. The dots are the sun’s path today, warm where the light turns golden; the stage opens at three quarters of an hour after sunset. Slide through the day, or drag the sky to turn it.
How Sol measures it.
Between 6° and 12° below, enough sky glow remains to show the sea horizon while the navigational stars are visible — the window a sextant needs. On land it is the deep blue after the streetlights come on, when the first-magnitude stars are up and the fainter ones are not yet.
